The description
These chilled cream puffs are made with Hokkaido fresh cream and custard, and often feature seasonal packaging like the Halloween version in this post.
The good
Today is Monteur Day in Japan. Monteur is a dessert company in Japan that specialise in fresh, chilled desserts in particular. We eat quite a bit of Monteur desserts. Not all the time! But every now and then. The mini cream puffs, or puchi choux in Japanese, are not my personal favorite, but they are popular enough in my household. What I like about their mini cream puffs is that there are ten in the pack. You will also find Monteur's mini eclairs reviewed on City-cost and there are only five in that product. Ten means that my four kids and I get to have two each - my husband doesn't have a sweet tooth at all. The price is also quite reasonable at around 199 yen, before tax, per packet. The price ranges by supermarket and by age of this fresh product - they tend to be discounted as they near their sell by date.
The not so good
I wrote above that I like that there is ten and compared to the eclair product that only has five. However, the Monteur mini eclairs are a better buy overall, because although they only have five in the pack, they are more substantial than the mini cream puffs. The mini cream puffs leave me longing for more - there isn't enough substance in them for satisfaction. They are only bite size and are gone in a flash. The fresh cream is delicious, but the choux is a bit too light, leaving you feel like you haven't just indulged in a luxurious treat! I only tend to buy these when, for one reason or another, the mini eclairs aren't available or I am not in the mood for other fresh, chilled desserts.
