Japanese I still struggle with - su and tsu

I was reminded today of one of my recurring mistakes when I speak Japanese. I still struggle to clearly distinguish SU and TSU. When I hear them, I’m not always certain which one it is, and when I say them, I’m not always producing the sound I think I am. 

Today's mix up came from my pronunciation rather than my listening. I was referring to my youngest daughter as "suekko", the Japanese for youngest child. In my head that was what I was saying, but apparently my mouth was producing "tsuekko". At least, that's how my youngest daughter was hearing it. She corrected me; "Mam, its not tsuekko, its suekko". I tried again, concentrating on the su, but she shook her head. To her ears, it still sounded like tsu. In my defense though, my Japanese husband said it sounded like "su" to him!

I have countless examples like this from over the years, and I’ve accepted that this particular flaw may never fully disappear. It rarely matters… unless I’m speaking to a teacher as strict as my youngest daughter!
