Keeping cool in summer: Cooling Towels

Cooling towels are one of the easiest items to carry in Japan in summer. Especially as they've become a staple in convenience stores, drugstores, and even 100-yen stores. They’re especially helpful for walks, festivals, and sports days, and they’re gentle enough for children to use.

What they are

Cooling towels work by using evaporative cooling: once the fabric is damp, airflow helps lower the surface temperature, giving you a refreshing chill against your skin. You simply wet the towel, wring it out, and snap or shake it to activate the cooling effect.  Some towels stay cool for long periods, while others can be reactivated with a quick shake.  They're lightweight, reusable, (many are) machine-washable, and perfect for days when the heat feels relentless.

There are many different versions sold in Japan. The ones in the 100-yen are simple, just the towel, no frills. But I like the ones, like the one pictured, that come in compact bottles or pouches. This makes them easy to keep in a bag during commutes or outdoor events.  At around ¥300–¥500, they’re an affordable way to stay comfortable during Japan’s humid summer months.

A small cooling item, that is surprisingly effective and easy to keep on hand when the heat hits. Do you use cooling towels?
