Microseason: Cotton Flowers Bloom

The 40th of Japan's 72 microseasons is Cotton Flowers Bloom 綿柎開（わたのはなしべ ひらく）. This year it runs from August 23rd to 27th and is the first microseason of the "Shosho" Manageable Heat Solar Term when the oppressive heat of midsummer finally begins to ease. This microseason marks the period when the white cotton fruit begins to appear from the calyx.

During this microseason cotton shifts from flowering to fruiting. When the calyx opens it is a sign of maturity and traditionally farmers watched for the change as part of the late-summer field management. Rice paddies also show clear seasonal movement with grains swelling and becoming heavier. Dragonflies increase and cicada calls begin to fade.

Historically, this was the time when households began preparing warmer clothes, including winter cotton-filled garments. It was deeply connected to the concept of 'wearing' the fruits of your labor. I think these days people probably switch out their wardrobes much later Although, sometimes September nights can be unexpectedly cool, bordering on cold, especially after typhoons.

Across Japan, the atmosphere changes noticeably. There is a sense of the end of summer. Some children will go back to school during this microseason. The busiest summer travel period has ended and summer festivals and fireworks are wrapping up. Mornings and evenings feel cooler, and the overall pace softens as the country transitions from high summer into the gentler tail end of August.
