Vegan Friendly Food Truck on Soy Milk Day
Today, and October 12th annually, is Soy Milk day 豆乳の日 in Japan. It is a commemoration established by the Japan Soy Milk Association, headquartered in Tokyo, who - among other things - conduct soymilk qualification certification exams.
The reason they chose 10/12 for the anniversary is twofold. One, it is Sports Day in Japan, a day that people think about health and body care. Two, the 12th can be broken down into 10+2 and read as "Tou (10) nyuu (2)", the Japanese for soy milk.
The anniversary reminded me of a food truck I saw earlier in the year promoting vegan-friendly soy milk French toast. The sign at the side of the truck, pictured, advertises its soy milk French toast as containing no eggs or dairy, with vegan-friendly topping options also available including whipped cream, Oreo, and seasonal sakura toppings.
Vegan-friendly food is much easier to find now than when I first arrived in Japan, but it's still unusual to come across a food truck that specifically caters to vegans. Whether you're vegan or simply curious to try a dairy- and egg-free dessert, this soy milk French toast is a welcome find.
