Agapanthus, a birthday flower of June 11th

Agapanthus, a birthday flower of June 11th photo

Agapanthus, known in Japanese as 紫君子蘭 (Murasaki‑kunshiran), is one of early summer’s most graceful flowers. Its tall stems carry clusters of trumpet‑shaped blooms in shades of purple, blue, white, and soft pink. In Japan, Agapanthus blooms from June to August, but I see them most often in June in the Kanto Plain (Greater Tokyo Area). I took the photo in this post on June 23rd.

The flower’s name comes from the Greek words agape (love) and anthos (flower), giving it the poetic meaning “flower of love”.  Its hanakotoba reflects this origin: “arrival of love,” “intellectual beauty" and "love letter".  The latter (love letter) is also its flower language In English. Agapanthus is one of the birthday flowers of both June 11th and June 29th, aligning perfectly with its peak bloom in Japan.
