Passing time wisely

I’m thinking with all this time on my hands, i think I should probably be learning something new. The only thing I can think about is buying a bike and riding off into the sunset. What are you doing to pass the time wisely? The Rosetta Stone I downloaded recently still hasn’t been opened. Oh, and they’re now offering 3 months free I think.

I've been working from home for two weeks, but also catching up on things that get sidelined by life. The kitchen is spotless, as I cleaned under the gas table, scrubbed the toaster oven, cleaned and sorted out the fridge, and learned that yes, baking soda and a ball of aluminum foil cleans stainless saucepans. Daily bike rides keep me in shape. On my way, I pay bills and pick up shopping for a disabled neighbor. If I'm helpful to someone else, I feel less helpless, and my neighbor is happy. Like @genkidesu, self care is so important now, whether it means taking time in the bath, or escaping with a movie, or exploring something you enjoy. I'm also going through my tea stash, and spending time on skin care (got some rosacea going on that I'd like to knock down).

I'm finding myself drawn to working out more. Maybe it's the endorphin kick, but I'm finding that it also helps me feel like I'm doing something productive. I work from home on a normal basis anyway, so not much changed there, although I'm knocking out some extra tasks I've been trying to get done - so that's a little victory too. Part of the current sitution has meant I'm also trying to let myself relax though. If I push myself to do too much, I feel like I'll stress myself right out, in what's already quite a stressful, unknown situatiob. Giving myself grace to binge watch some Netflix or aimlessly scroll on Pinterest or Instagram is keeping me sane! :)

Also, I had a really nice catch up with some friends the other day - we are currently scattered all over the globe, here in Japan, in Europe, and the US, so we used Zoom so we could easily group chat. It was good for the soul to catch up, like a weight was lifted from all of us by having a laugh and feeling connected. The current situation is tough, but I'm glad we have modern technology that makes it easier to stay in touch and feel less isolated.

These days I really like to try out to cook new dishes from countries around the world. Cooking is a really hard challenges for me, since only half of what I'm trying to cook looks and taste like I want it. On the other hand my family is happy to have some new dishes than the usual ones. Also I'm working on my own projects and future business ideas.

I know I should be learning something and make the best use of the time, but I also just ordered my copy of Animal Crossing....... So I will be camping in the virtual world for a while.

@Sanrio I bought a nice tent last year on sale and couldn’t wait to use it this year. I think I may just set it up in my drive way and do some virtual camping.

I cancelled my gym membership months ago and bought an exercise bike, I’m yet to really sweat out on it. Be careful not to hurt yourself because the hospital is the last place we should be going now. @genkidesu

@ConeHead I grew many herbs on my balcony otherwise there are enough seasonings at the supermarket. If you need something special, make it by yourself ;)

@JapanRamen this I know all too well about. Immediately after 3/11 I was doing the same. Please take care of your sanity. The good thing is that you’re not jobless & homeless.

@ConeHead Usually I take a walk or a bike ride to warm my body up. Then I either watch a YouTube video for stretches or just go through the ones I like. I really like stretching my back and shoulders because they get tired from sitting or looking at my computer all day! You can even do it while watching TV!

I'm still working, but mostly from home. That said of course, for the extra time indoors on days off, well, I should be trying to get plenty of use out of the kettlebell weight that I bought the other week. (I won't say how heavy it is, I'm too embarrassed.) I've also got the Swiss ball to do exercise with. I've got a James Joyce which I've had for a while but gave up halfway through, so maybe I'll get around to tackling that ... maybe!

I've mostly been spending my time studying Japanese and baking pastries for my housemates. I've also started some new cooking projects that are a little more time consuming like making amasake. So I'm learning heaps of new things every day, it's actually a lot of fun!

My newest "using time wisely" activity is trying to organize all of the photos on my phone. I have thousands, and I have to arrange which I need to actually print, which should be deleted, and so forth. Keeping me busy so far!

I cleaned my apartment during a 14 days quarantine. During that time I also kept a diary, studied a lot of Japanese and started contacting old friends. I started sewing reusable masks recently because I'm running low on the commercial masks. I think having around four reusable masks around is a good number, so I'll try sewing one more.

I've decluttered my entire house and can't say I'm regretting it. It's amazing how stuff accumulates. Secretly. Constantly. Thanks to the energy boost I felt after decluttering, I'm keeping up with my workouts before work. And thanks to getting rid of my (very comfy!) living room chairs, I have more space to move around.

After the many months, I thought I would have learned something new by now, but the house feels messier than ever and I am still lazy as heck.... I think my standard for living actually dropped, to be honest!

@JapanRamen I started out saying I’ll get google and apple certified.....I did not!!! I quickly lost interest. I’m missing life before covid a lot a lot.

What sakura apps / websites are you using in 2024?

What websites or Apps are you using to keep track of the bloom stages of cherry blossoms in 2024? I usually use a mix of Tenki.jp, Yahoo and Jorudan and another one that I have forgotten! (I delete them at the end of each season to free up space on my phone). I occasionally use the app from JMA, but I don't like its set up. Are there any other Apps or websites you recommend? TIA

What's in your toshikoshi soba?

What do you put in your toshikoshi soba? One year I sauteed some chicken and naganegi to start a broth augmented with tsuyu, cooked the soba separately, and served the broth with kamaboko slices.

Transferring Pension

I'm currently sorting through EVERYTHING I bought back from Japan with me, so you'll get all your new blogs soon. I came across some documents that I actually completed when I came back from Japan, which was to do with pensions. This took me a while to figure out because it was complicated. Would you like to know how to transfer your pension to you from Japan? People say you can't. The things is... you can.

My FIRST Log! Would You Like to Hear it?

In my last post I asked what you would like to hear from me now I have left. I was digging through some stuff the other day and I found my very FIRST book log that I kept when I toured Japan originally. I was thinking about typing it up and reminding myself of what my younger self thought of Japan. Would you like to hear about what I got up to? I'm not sure if I can even remember! HA!!
