Is autumn disappearing in Japan?

Anyone who's lived in Japan for a while has probably noticed that the seasons don't always behave quite like they used to, and according to a new survey, autumn is becoming particularly difficult to pin down.

A survey of 500 working women across Japan found that more than 80% no longer feel like it's really autumn when the season rolls around, with hot weather increasingly stretching into September and October. At the same time, autumn remains the favorite season for climate, fashion, and makeup, suggesting people still want to enjoy it, even if the weather isn't cooperating.

For expats, this is particularly useful info when it comes to clothing. More than 60% of respondents said they'd bought autumn clothes they couldn't wear as much as expected because of changing weather. More than half of those planning to buy autumn clothes this year also intend to spend less than ¥10,000, while around 30% prioritize pieces that can be worn across multiple seasons.

Then there's skincare. After months of heat, humidity, and UV exposure, dry skin, sun damage, and chapped lips are among the biggest autumn concerns. Around 30% of respondents mentioned wanting to tackle summer damage while simultaneously preparing their skin for winter.

Are you finding there's less of a need for an "in-between" wardrobe?
