Top picks for celebrating Christmas in Japan

Even though Christmas in Japan isn't an official public holiday, it has firmly settled in as a seasonal tradition for many families. A recent nationwide survey by Ikoyo Family Lab shows that households with children are embracing the holiday in their own relaxed and family-focused way.

The most common way to celebrate is by having a party at home, with 68.3 percent of respondents choosing this option. Families mentioned things like preparing a special meal, decorating the house, and enjoying cake together. Many parents mentioned that they look forward to creating these moments just as much as their children do, and I can relate. It's nice having traditions that you repeat year-after-year!

Decorations are also a major part of the season, with more than half of families saying they enjoy decorating with Christmas items, from small wreaths to full trees. I think there are easy ways to do this quite economically, such as getting things from 100 yen stores. There's plenty of items to choose from, even if you have a smaller space and limited budget.

Outside the home, Christmas illuminations remain one of the most popular winter outings. Nearly 49 percent of families visit light displays, markets, or seasonal events, making these excursions a key part of the holiday atmosphere. Other activities like craft workshops, Christmas markets, and amusement-park events also attract families looking for hands-on, memory-making things to do.

If you celebrate Christmas in Japan, are there any special things you do to mark the day?
