What makes a home family-friendly in Japan?
Before having kids, I think a lot of us opt to choose where to live here based on usual things like rent, commute, or maybe whether there are amenities like a supermarket nearby. Once children enter the picture, the list of priorities changes quite a bit, or at least it did for me, anyway!
A recent survey by AZWAY really captured that shift quite well, I thought. The biggest concern for parents was something incredibly everyday, which was the presence of stairs or steps, and the risk of falls. That was followed by a lack of storage, not enough space, and even noise issues with neighbors. One of my biggest fears in the house we live in when my kids were younger were the stairs, since they're the "gappy" style that a little one could fall through...and they're pretty steep, too!

Something else that stood out to me from the survey was how many people said convenience ended up mattering just as much as the home itself. Being close to a station, supermarket, daycare, school, or even grandparents made a huge difference to people's housing choices. Daily life here can be incredibly convenient, but I guess that's only if your home actually works with your routine instead of against it.
One of the most relatable findings was that nearly 40% of respondents said they'd choose a different home if they could do it again, while almost the same number said they'd stay where they are but make improvements. I would say that sometimes it's not that your home is terrible, it's just that parenting exposes every little inefficiency that little bit more!
