Spring in rural areas doesn't just mean flowers to enjoy...
We're starting to see signs of spring out here in rural Niigata after a winter filled with heavy snow, but that doesn't mean just fun things like blossoms and other flowers to enjoy. It also means the serious issue of bears returning.

A recent report from The Japan Times highlighted a seasonal reality many rural residents like myself know all too well. Hibernating bears are waking up, and that means the risk of encounters starts rising again. For those of us where spring also brings mountain walks, gardening, and foraging for sansai, it's something you can't really ignore.
Experts in the article I linked above say whether sightings stay high may depend on how much natural food, like acorns and nuts, is available in the mountains this year. I think it's probably still going to be a "wait and see" situation to see if it's as bad as it was last year, but taking necessary precautions if you're out and about in nature would be my recommendation!
