Saddened for home while living in Japan
Many of you have probably already seen in the news that Australia had a terrorist event yesterday, which resulted in a number of people being shot and killed. The event happened at Bondi Beach, an area which many visitors to my home country have probably been to if they stopped in Sydney.

A view of Sydney from a trip I took there in early 2013. Later that year, I moved to Japan.
It's a weird feeling, living here when something awful happens in your homeland. You feel a level of helplessness, sadness, and feelings of "what is happening in my home country?", mixed with pride at the heroic story of a regular citizen taking down one of the shooters and people lining up to donate blood. As Mr. Rogers said, "look for the helpers", which is what I try to do.
