Reasons why Christmas in Japan beats Australia: It's easier if you're transient

For travelers, expats, and solo residents, I'm sure that Christmas in my home country of Australia can feel pretty difficult. The holiday is everywhere (in stores, media, even casual conversations), but it often revolves around family, long-distance travel, and social obligations. If you're not part of a household celebration, the day can feel isolating, since restaurants and cafes are often closed and public spaces can feel empty or exclusively family-oriented. Even things like a festive meal or an outing require significant advance planning or luck.

By contrast, I think Japan offers a nice, gentle alternative. I mentioned it on another blog, but since Christmas isn't a national holiday, life continues normally. Restaurants, shops, and public transport keep running, so you can enjoy the day however you like.

For expats or even travelers passing through, I feel like Christmas in Japan is a much easier landing point than it would be for the same groups in my home country.
