The description
This product is an ohagi rice ball (hence the OHA name) topped with chestnut cream, and it's a limited time offering available from Kaldi Coffee Farm stores. It was priced at 246 yen including tax.
The good
If you like traditional Japanese sweets that have a bit of a Western twist, this ohagi topped with chestnut cream from Kaldi Coffee Farm is really tasty. It's available from the freezer section so you do need to thaw it, but it's a delicious treat. The ohagi is made using red bean paste and rice sourced from Hokkaido, and the chestnut cream on top adds a nice additional sweetness without being cloying. It's presented quite nicely, too, with the piped whipped cream on top looking almost like cupcake frosting. Worth trying if you like Japanese sweets and chestnut flavors!
The not so good
As I mentioned above, this item is in the freezer section at Kaldi -- and the instructions note that you need to thaw it in the fridge for about 7 to 8 hours before you plan on consuming it. It's definitely not an "instant gratification" kind of dessert, so just keep that in mind! Overall though, I liked this a lot -- it was a sweet treat that wasn't too sweet, and it was nice and filling probably owing to the red bean paste. Give it a try if you see it at your local Kaldi store and it sounds good to you. Happy eating!
