Japan doesn't make top 10 of safest countries to walk at night

One of the things I really value about life in Japan is the fact that I can walk anywhere without fear. I've never once felt that my personal safety has been threatened here, even after dark.

I saw an article online yesterday (via Conde Nast Traveler) which was about the world's top 10 safest countries to walk in at night, and I really thought that Japan would be a shoo-in to make that list -- I assumed we'd be at the tippy-top of it. However, Japan didn't even make the cut, with the top 10 as follows:

Singapore

Tajikistan 

China 

Oman

Saudi Arabia 

Hong Kong, SAR of China 

Kuwait 

Norway 

Bahrain 

United Arab Emirates 

Of that list, I've only been to Singapore and Hong Kong. I'd say that Singapore felt about as safe as here, but Hong Kong maybe less so?
