Sunglasses and eye health in Japan

Back home in Australia, sunglasses are practically standard equipment, and especially during summer it can feel like just about everyone has a pair on. Here in Japan, I see sunglasses much less frequently. It's interesting, because I see people being very sun-conscious in other ways (long sleeves, hats, umbrellas, and so forth), but sunglasses aren't as much of a thing.

A recent research-based press release from Iwami Ophthalmology Clinic noted that UV radiation can damage the eyes, and cumulative exposure over a lifetime has been linked to conditions including pterygium and certain types of cataracts. The important point, however, is that it's not just whether you've been exposed to UV, but how much exposure you've accumulated over the years.

That means there's a big difference between someone spending hours outdoors every day and someone who works inside and only gets a little sun during their commute. People who regularly surf, ski, hike, fish, play outdoor sports, or work outside are likely to benefit most from sunglasses and a hat, but I think being sun smart is wise for anyone!

Are sunglasses part of your everyday routine when out and about here?
