The upcoming Year of the Horse

Somewhere along the way during my years here, I got genuinely into the 十二支, not just as cute decorations at shrines and on New Year cards, but for what each animal is said to represent. As 2026 approaches, it's the Year of the Horse, and it's one that feels easy to get behind.

In the Japanese zodiac, the Horse is associated with energy, independence, and forward momentum. It's also seen as a symbol of action, adventure, and a strong desire for freedom. People born in Horse years are often described as lively, optimistic, and driven, sometimes to the point of restlessness.

Even if you're not born in the Year of the Horse, there's a sense that this is a year meant for movement, whether that's travel, personal growth, or finally committing to something you've been circling for a while.

This one feels a little personal for me, since my daughter was born here in Japan in 2014, right at the tail end of the last Year of the Horse (she just snuck in, as she was actually due in early January of 2015). As she's grown, it's been hard not to notice how closely she matches those classic Horse traits. She's energetic, independent, and always eager to be on the move.

Are you born in the Year of the Horse? Do you feel like the characteristics align with your personality?
