Time to consider Kumamoto

Kumamoto is putting out the call for visitors following last month's earthquake, saying that visiting the region is one way people can support its recovery. I have to admit, there's something very reassuring about hearing that!

It reminds me of having a friend who's been sick. You want to stop by, but you don't necessarily know whether they're ready for visitors, and you absolutely don't want to turn up at the wrong time or make things harder. When that person finally says "come and see me," you know that your company is actually wanted. Maybe it's a bad analogy, but that's how I feel about Kumamoto.

It's been on my Japan bucket list for years as one of the few remaining prefectures I have left to visit. My husband got to visit several years ago for work purposes, and really enjoyed it.

The earthquake has obviously brought challenges for the region and recovery will take time, but I do think tourism can be a big part of that recovery too. A hotel stay, a meal at a local restaurant, a visit to an attraction, or a little shopping all put money directly into local businesses and help the rebuilding process!
