Some (temporary) good news for electricity bills
I saw an article online this morning via NHK, where Tohoku Electric Power announced that electricity rates for August are falling for the second month in a row. An average household will pay around ¥7,788 for its electricity usage this month, which is ¥133 less than in July. It might not sound like a huge reduction, but after years of rising household costs I'll happily take any decrease!
The lower bill is mainly thanks to a government subsidy of ¥4.5 per kWh for fuel used this month, which was introduced to help offset soaring fuel costs linked to increased tensions in the Middle East.

There's a catch, though. The government support will continue for usage through next month, but then the subsidy drops to ¥3.5 per kWh. Tohoku Electric is also warning that electricity prices remain difficult to predict, with future fuel costs potentially affected by the situation in Iran and global energy supply and demand.
