The description
This product is a tub of Salty Caramel & Pistachio Gelato, and it's one of two new gelato options available from Haagen-Dazs for the summer. It was 373 yen including tax.
The good
Along with the tropical/coconut gelato that Haagen-Dazs have released for the summer, there's also this salty caramel & pistachio gelato option if you're after something that feels a little bit more rich and indulgent. It's the same price (373 yen including tax), and it's a tasty option to try. Apparently when making this, the recipe testers at Haagen-Dazs literally increased the salt content of the salted caramel in 0.01% increments (according to a press release, anyway!) so that it would work harmoniously with the pistachio. I do think the flavors of both felt nicely balanced without overpowering one or the other, so props to them for the rigorous testing!
The not so good
The usual critique I have about Haagen-Dazs products also stands for this one. It's expensive at almost 400 yen for a tub, and there are definitely more economical options out there if you're just looking for a cool and refreshing treat. I did like the flavor combination of this a lot, and the texture is really nice and light, but I wouldn't be going out of my way to purchase it again...and that's really just a reflection of the price. I would still say it's fun to try at least once if you're a fan of the caramel/pistachio flavor combination. Keep an eye out for it at your nearest supermarket or convenience store if it sounds appealing to you -- happy eating! :)
