Salt intake awareness is growing in Japan

Japan is famous for some super flavorful dishes like ramen, miso soup, pickles, and soy sauce-based meals, but a new survey suggests many people across the country are becoming extra mindful of how much salt they consume.

In research conducted by MyVoiceCom, nearly 70% of respondents said they associate salt and sodium with high blood pressure, making it the most common health concern linked to salt intake. Around 60% also said they're actively paying attention to the amount and frequency of salt they consume.

Warming, nourishing, comforting - but salty!

The survey of more than 11,000 people found that many are trying to cut back in practical ways. Nearly half said they avoid eating too many salty foods, while others choose lightly seasoned dishes, use less soy sauce and seasoning, or rely on dashi broth and umami flavors to reduce the need for extra salt.

The interest in low-sodium products also appears to be growing, with over half of the respondents saying they purchase reduced-salt items such as soy sauce, miso, and pickles.

At the same time, salt remains closely tied to daily life in Japan, especially summer when it's often associated with heatstroke prevention and electrolyte replacement.

Do you find yourself looking for ways to balance traditional flavors with healthier eating habits?
