A surprise on Asia's most walkable cities in Japan
I'm such a big fan of walkable cities. Places that you can easily get around on foot, with a great public transport system, solid amenities, and compact urban areas are such a winner, and have loads of benefits for health and wellbeing.
I was a little surprised, then, to see that a recent report about the world's most walkable cities from Skyscanner included Nagasaki as Japan's top offering. I've visited Nagasaki and loved it, but one thing I probably wouldn't call it (easily) is walkable.
The hills make for some beautiful views, but I think the walkability of the city suffers as a result of them!
Sure, the urban area is compact, you can access a lot on foot or via the tramway system, and everything seems well-maintained. But one thing I really struggled with when we visited there (as a relatively fit and healthy 30 something at the time) was all the hills! Some of them are extremely steep, and I don't think I'd refer to it as a pleasant-to-walk city based on that factor alone. I can't imagine how it would be for people who are older or have mobility issues, for instance.
What do you think of Nagasaki being named one of Asia's most walkable cities? Are there any others that you think should have been recognized?
