Differences between Australia and Japan: meaty snacks vs. fishy snacks
One of the first differences I noticed between Japan and Australia when I first moved here showed up in snack aisles of supermarkets and convenience stores. In Australia I grew up with meat based options everywhere, and things like sausage rolls, mini pies, and anything that reminded you of a barbecue were easy to grab. Seafood snacks existed, but they were never a mainstream choice for most people I knew.
Japan feels completely different in that regard, since convenience stores and supermarkets stock row after row of seafood snacks. There are dried squid strips, tiny packs of seasoned fish, crunchy shrimp crackers, mentaiko flavored chips, and onigiri with a bunch of seafood-y fillings to name just a handful.

My kids demolish anything shrimpy/fishy flavored. Me? I prefer meaty flavored things (Wasabeef chips are my #1!)
I have to admit that I'm not the biggest fan of the fishier options. I can handle a few, but some of the stronger ones still make me hesitate, even after all these years. My kids, on the other hand, will devour them without a second thought. Watching them embrace Japanese snacks so easily reminds me of how quickly children adapt compared to adults, and how our taste preferences are often shaped by where we grow up.
Are your snacking habits still heavily influenced by your country of origin, or have you adapted to more Japanese flavors?
