The description

This product is a mixed fry bento which had some cutlet pieces, a fried shrimp, and fried fish piece plus some other side dishes. I got it from my local independent supermarket.

The good

My local supermarket typically has a decent lineup of bento on offer each day, and I recently grabbed this one for a quick meal. It came with a variety of different fried items along with rice, some veggies, and a small amount of tomato-sauced pasta. It was a very filling meal, and for just a touch over 400 yen it ends up cheaper than most meals I could get at a restaurant. I also appreciate that it had a fresh, homemade taste to it -- it didn't feel like it had been sitting around for long, so they get points for quality.

The not so good

When you look at this bento, one thing is evident quite quickly -- the majority of this meal is rice. That's fine if you really like rice, but I would like to see a higher vegetable component to some bento so that it would feel like more of a balanced meal. I guess rice is fairly cheap (and filling!) so it serves as a good bento item, but it does end up pretty carb-heavy. Also, the mixed fried goods aren't always things I like -- for instance, I'm not a huge shrimp fan, but I love katsu. In saying that, the parts I don't really care for end up going to my husband who is far less picky than I am, so there's no waste.
