How much is too much for Halloween in Japan?

For parents like me who are raising kids in Japan, events like Halloween can come with the tricky question of how much are you actually supposed to do?!

A new survey from Kodansha's parenting media outlet Cocreco offers a look into the unwritten rules and differing expectations families can encounter. The survey of 109 parents found that there's no universal approach to celebrating Halloween, with families varying considerably in how much time, money, and effort they put into the occasion.

The most common way families celebrate is by making or buying Halloween sweets. Children may also take part in Halloween events through kindergarten, school, or extracurricular activities, while some families decorate their homes or dress up their children.

Costumes were the biggest source of uncertainty for parents. Some wondered how much they should spend, while others weren't sure whether homemade costumes were expected or whether a simple outfit from a 100 yen shop would be enough. One parent found themselves underdressed compared with other children, while another felt they had gone all-out when everyone else had kept things casual.

For expat parents, it's a good reminder that navigating life in Japan often means figuring out these little social expectations as you go, and Halloween is no exception. Ultimately, the survey suggests there's no single "right" way to do Halloween in Japan.
