Things I love to see: Places other than the big 3 getting global recognition

Working in a travel-related field here, I do find it mildly frustrating when I see a lot of global publications covering the big three (Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto) as "must-visit" places. Don't get me wrong, I think those places are great, but they're so packed with tourists these days that it can detract from the overall enjoyment gained.

It's part of why I was so encouraged to see the New York Times offering Nagasaki and Okinawa as two places on their 52 destinations for 2026 list. Having been to both places, I think they're worthwhile spots to visit for both Japan travelers and expats living here if you have the opportunity.

A cloudy day in Nagasaki from a trip I took there several years back.

I really enjoyed the historical element of Nagasaki when I visited, and Okinawa has so much to offer in terms of natural beauty and amazing coastlines.

I'm hoping that less-visited additions to lists like these helps to disperse people out a bit and get them to see a different side of Japan in the process. I'm a firm believer that every single prefecture has something cool to offer!
