How couples in Japan split their finances

If you have a partner, how do you split finances with them, and has that changed since moving here? Figuring out how to divide living costs as a couple can be complicated, and perhaps even more so if you're throwing cultural differences into the mix if your spouse/partner is Japanese!

On that note, new research suggests that how couples talk about money may matter far more than how they actually split it.

The survey was conducted among 552 people in Japan who currently live or have lived with a partner, and it found that the most common arrangement was a straight 50:50 split of living expenses, chosen by 53% of respondents. Another 36% said they split costs proportionally based on income.

Interestingly, couples using a 50:50 split reported higher relationship satisfaction overall than couples using income-based sharing. They were also far less likely to argue about money.

I thought that the biggest takeaway from the survey was that the actual payment method mattered less than whether couples properly discussed it together. Couples who said expenses were decided somewhat haphazardly without real conversation reported relationship satisfaction levels almost half those of couples who openly discussed finances before deciding.

Another interesting trend involved joint accounts and shared budgeting apps. Couples who used shared financial tools were far more likely to say their financial values felt aligned, likely because spending became more transparent and easier to track together.
