Will daylight savings ever come back to Japan?

Back home in Australia, daylight savings was always something I looked forward to. I loved finishing work with sunlight still left in the day, and I especially appreciated not being woken at 4am by the early summer sunrise like I often am here in Japan. That's probably a big part of why I find the debate around daylight savings here so interesting.

Japan apparently tried daylight savings once (back during the postwar occupation), but it was wildly unpopular and scrapped before the occupation even ended in 1952. Since then, Japan has stuck with standard time all year round, even as other countries adjust their clocks.

Recently, though, the idea of bringing it back has gained some attention. Advocates argue that shifting schedules forward could ease summer commutes in the heat, reduce sleep disruption from those early sunrises, and even encourage people to spend more time socializing or enjoying outdoor activities in the evenings. Apparently there are even some economic benefits that might come about if it's introduced.

Whether Japan will seriously reintroduce daylight savings remains to be seen. But as an expat, I'm a fan of it and think it would be a nice change to the summer months here.

Is daylight savings observed in your country of origin? Would you be for or against it being implemented here in Japan?
