It's almost tsukimi time, which means egg burgers are coming!

It still feels very much like summer, but the arrival of Tsukimi season is already starting to show up on restaurant menus. I saw a press release today about KFC Japan getting in early this year, and they'll be launching their new Toro-ri Tsukimi series across the country from August 26th.

If you're new to Japan, Tsukimi (moon-viewing) is a traditional autumn custom centered around appreciating the beauty of the full moon. Over the years, lots of Japanese fast-food chains have put their own spin on the tradition, and the egg-topped burger has become one of the most recognizable seasonal offerings since it's meant to look like a full moon. I've also seen chains opt for things like pineapple rings on burgers in the past for that full moon emulation!

The press release said that KFC have gone all-in on the egg this year, increasing the amount of egg yolk sauce in their fried egg-style omelet for an even creamier texture. The lineup includes the classic Tsukimi Fillet Burger and Tsukimi Twister, alongside a new Japanese-style katsu burger with 1.5 times more tartar sauce than last year. Even more indulgent is the Triple Tsukimi, featuring three layers of egg.

There's also a sweet option if you're not big on savory, the Mochi and Rich Custard Moon-Viewing Pie, which gets 20% more custard this year. I'm definitely keen to try it out!
