How increasing heat is changing family summer plans in Japan

If you're parenting in Japan, finding ways to keep your kids occupied during summer without being out in the heat all the time can be difficult. If you feel that way too, you're not alone! A recent survey by Ikoyo Family Lab (a platform used by Japanese parents for outing ideas) highlighted just how much the extreme heat is shaping family life, with about 74% of households with children actively changing how they go out during heatwaves. It's something that's likely to continue, as each year seems to be getting hotter than the last.

Some common adjustments include heading out early in the morning or later in the evening, opting for indoor play areas or shopping centers, and prioritizing water-based activities like pools, beaches, and rivers. Some families are even cutting back on outings altogether or choosing different ways to get around to avoid long stretches under the sun.

When it comes to heatstroke prevention gear, Japanese families mentioned relying on a few essentials. At the top of the list were hats, followed by water bottles, handheld fans, and parasols. Many parents also mentioned struggles that feel universal, such as kids refusing to wear hats or getting so absorbed in playing that they forget to drink water. Not surprisingly, the main safety focus was simply encouraging children to stay hydrated!

Whether you're new to Japan or have lived here for years, I think the increasing heat definitely warrants a rethink of the usual summer routines. At the end of the day it's all about staying safe and healthy, and if that requires a bit of a calendar or activity re-jig I think it's 110% worth it!
