Humid health problems in Japan: hair issues

I moved to Japan years ago now from a country with a drier climate, and one thing I didn't really anticipate was the effects of humidity on a whole range of health concerns. One of them is a more visual thing, perhaps, but I think something that a lot of us have probably struggled with, and that's the impact humidity has on hair.

Part of what inspired this blog was that I saw a press release from a shampoo company, and they'd conducted a survey about hair concerns during rainy season. A pretty huge 90% of survey respondents said they'd had issues with their hair because of the humidity of this time of year, with about 70% of those people reporting frizziness and wavy hair.

Since the survey was conducted by a shampoo company, a lot of the advice given was to consider different products. I had often done that with beauty items during the winter months here to try and combat dry skin, for instance, but hadn't really considered it much to combat the hair frizziness. Something to research, perhaps!

Do you find your hair getting frizzy because of the humidity? Any tried and true tricks you've got to manage it?

I feel like I had flyaways a lot even in dryer climates, but for sure frizzy hair. I thought it was just because I'm not Japanese and have wavy hair. A Japanese friend got a loose perm instead of the straight perm a couple years back, just because that helps smooth the hair. I wonder if a lot of people get straight perms because their hair looks too perfect! I'm not interested in doing that but it technically works. I am finding that drinking more water has seemed to help but I might be imagining it.
