Vogue spotlights cabbage, but it's more than a trend here in Japan
When I saw that Vogue recently spotlighted cabbage as a vegetable to watch in 2026, my first thought was that Japan figured this out a long time ago. Cabbage is one of the foods that has helped me keep both my cooking and my grocery bills under control during many of my years living here. I love that it's versatile in salads, yakisoba, nabe, even one of my children's favorites of okonomiyaki...and that's just getting started.

I guess what worries me slightly about seeing cabbage become fashionable is what happens next. Over the past couple of years, bad weather pushed prices up sharply, and suddenly this "cheap" staple was anything but.
Although I'm glad Vogue is giving it some love, I hope this new attention doesn't turn into another excuse for prices to skyrocket!
