Christmas cake is still worth the splurge in Japan

Christmas in Japan wouldn't feel quite complete without a festive cake (in our household, anyway!!), and it seems that rising prices aren't putting shoppers off treating themselves to one.

A new survey by online cake retailer Cake.jp found that 56.5% of respondents would still like to spend money on Christmas cake, even if they're cutting back on everyday purchases. Almost 95% said they planned to eat cake this Christmas, while nearly 75% intended to keep their cake budget around the same as last year.

Even outside of the Christmas period, strawberry shortcake is a tasty treat!!

The survey also offers a glimpse of how people plan to celebrate. With Christmas Day falling on a Friday in 2026, 70.5% said they wanted to enjoy the festive atmosphere from Friday through the weekend. More than half said they'd prefer to order their cake online and have it delivered.

As for flavors, the traditional faves are still popular. Strawberry shortcake topped the list of cakes people wanted for Christmas, followed by chocolate cake and fruit tart.
