Tokyo is the world's richest city (by GDP, anyway)

I saw an article this week that Tokyo is the world's richest city based on GDP, ahead of some other urban heavyweights like New York, London, and Los Angeles. According to CEOWorld's global wealth index, Tokyo's GDP stands at $2.55 trillion, but that doesn't always make life here feel "rich" for most everyday folk, like a lot of our expat community here trying to stretch our yen.

While Tokyo's economy is massive, I think that much of that wealth exists in the corporate space rather than in people's everyday lives. Rents can be steep, grocery bills unpredictable (e.g. the ongoing rice crisis!) and a meal or a night out can quickly eat into your budget if you're not mindful.

Still, I think life in Tokyo (and Japan as a whole) offers a kind of wealth that doesn't show up in things like GDP figures. There's a great deal of safety, efficiency, clean streets, and an endless list of affordable ways to eat and be entertained if you know where to look, and I think those are the things you can't put a price on.

What qualities do you think makes a city feel rich, outside things like GDP?
