The expat "tax"

Have you noticed that living as an expat has certain fees and charges associated with it that you wouldn't experience at home? It's happened to me a number of times since living here, but I noticed it most recently as I've been submitting paperwork to renew my passport. Thankfully I can renew it via mail by sending documents to the Australian embassy in Tokyo, so I don't have to make a physical trip there – but there is an overseas surcharge of $146 Australian dollars (about 14,200 yen at the time of writing) for processing. That's on top of $325 Aussie dollars just to renew the passport!

Do you have any good examples of where you've had to pay an expat "tax" simply because you're based overseas?
