Be safe with your kerosene appliances!
Winter is in full swing in Niigata Prefecture, and for expats, it's a reminder that staying warm here can be a little different from home. Kerosene stoves are a common way to heat homes here in Japan, but in many countries (including my home country, this just isn't something we think about. I think that makes understanding the safety rules all the more important!

Last year, of the 187 residential fires in Niigata, 30 were caused by stoves, with kerosene stoves leading the pack. Most accidents happen when kerosene spills during refueling or when flammable items like laundry or bedding are too close to the heat. Simple precautions go a long way, such as keeping flammables away, always closing the cap when refueling, and turning off stoves before leaving the house or going to bed.
Kerosene spills are another hazard. Last year there were 213 incidents where kerosene leaked from home tanks or machinery, sometimes reaching rivers. If a spill happens, contact your local fire department, city office, or the prefectural environmental center.
For expats, these warnings are part of adjusting to winter life in Japan. A little extra care keeps your home safe and also helps you enjoy the season with less worry.
