The description

This product is a lemon cream bun, and it's part of a collaboration between the famous cream bun store Hattendo and Tully's. It was 400 yen including tax.

The good

I'm always so encouraged when I see plant-based offerings making it mainstream here in Japan, and this new lemon cream bun is a collaboration between the famous cream bun store Hattendo and Tully's. The filling of the bun consists of a Setouchi lemon sauce and a soy milk based cream, and I think the zinginess of the lemon feels like a perfect release for the summer season here -- it's bright and fresh. The soy cream honestly tastes much like regular whipped cream, perhaps with a hint of nuttiness to it, and I liked it a lot. If you're vegan, have a dairy allergy, or just want a plant-based dessert item, I'd say this is worth trying!

The not so good

I do feel that at 400 yen this is pretty pricey -- if it was something being sold at a convenience store I feel like it would be about half the price. In saying that, I often find that these collaboration items come with a higher cost, so that could be why. Overall though, I do have to appreciate that a national chain is branching out into plant based offerings. While I'm not vegan myself, I do have friends and family who are -- and I really enjoy seeing that there are more and more options popping up here. It seems to be growing exponentially each year, which makes people's lives so much easier!
