A look at fruit price country rankings and where Japan stands
I wrote a blog recently about how I'm shine muscat obsessed, and it seems that unfortunately I have a taste for the expensive fruits here. Grapes and peaches are a couple of my favorites, and it got me thinking about how much more pricey they are here than at home. I would say that the quality here is always top-notch, but you pay for it, so I did a little digging about some stats.
According to the World Bank's International Comparison Program, Japan ranked number one in the world for fruit prices in 2021 (the data is a little old, I know) with an index of 281.73. To put that into perspective, the global average was just 132.69, and in somewhere like India, fruit costs less than a quarter of what it does in Japan.
This means that Japan's fruit prices are not just high, but dramatically higher than almost anywhere else. South Korea often shares Japan's reputation for expensive produce, and they came in second at 239.54, while countries like my home nation of Australia (170.95) and France (169.86) were far below. At the other end of the scale, fruit in India scored 57.39, making it the most affordable.
How do fruit costs compare here in Japan to your home country?
