The description
Asahi Beverage's Birely's Orange is a flat drink available in steel cans and, rarely, in glass bottles. It's made with Valencia oranges and unsweetened.
The good
While strolling through the neighborhood on the north side of Kasukabe's Kyu Nikko Kaido street, I felt transported to another era. Among the newer buildings are some old holdouts from the Taisho and Showa eras. Some of the small stores stock cheap drinks in steel cans. This time, I picked up an old-fashioned can of Birely's Orange. It's a flat drink made with orange juice. It doesn't have sweeteners or artificial colours. I found it at a retro shop, Kaneko Shoten. It's across the road from Takumiotsuka, the furniture showroom.
The not so good
Birely's Orange is a cheap, classic canned drink you'll find in supermarkets and convenience stores. I don't usually bother with it. But it's refreshing when it's ice cold. And especially nice to savour in retro surroundings. Birely's originated in the 1950s in California and was imported to Japan and Thailand. You can't get it anymore in the US or Thailand. I got the drink at Kaneko Shoten, a retro dagashiya. The shop stocks cheap treats and has a collection of vintage arcade games and ancient pachinko.
