The description
Asahi's Wonda canned coffee brand includes this blend with an evocative label. Loosely translated, it's "waiting and longing for you". The 185 g steel cans are sold in vending machines.
The good
It's not just Japanese people who are nostalgic for the Showa era. My first taste of chilled Japanese-style coffee was in the Showa era. And it came from a vending machine. At that time, it was about 100 yen a can. Wonda Showa no Kaori Kimi machikogare burendo, "waiting for you blend" uses the classic recipe. It's brewed from dark-roasted beans and has cream and syrup for sweetener. The label design evokes the era. It's sweet to temper the bitterness. I found this in a Dydo brand vending machine. It's about 160 yen.
The not so good
I got this canned coffee, Wonda Showa no Kaori Kimi machikogare burendo, just for the nostalgic label. It's okay as canned coffee goes. It's about 50 calories per can, and loaded with sucrose syrup. The can size hasn't changed from the Showa era the coffee is meant to evoke. However, the price sure has! The first time I bought canned coffee from a vending machine, it was 100 yen. These days, some canned coffee is nearly 200 yen. A newspaper feature happened to have a photo feature of retro game centers, as you can see from the product photo.
