The description
NEO Warabi Mochi is an instant version of the traditional Japanese sweet treat, warabimochi, a confection made with bracken starch and seasoned with kinako, a sweetened powder from soybeans.
The good
You know the story, "Jack and the Bean Stock"? The silly boy buys his hard-earned money for some apparently worthless beans, right? Well, I was in Asakusa to see Sensoji Temple when some street vendors hailed me. They had a display of various sweets. I got sucked in. For 1000 yen, I received four packets of instant warabi mochi, a confection made from warabiko, called bracken starch in English. The confection they sold me in small packets is an instant version - add water or tea, stir for an instant treat.
The not so good
The two managing the street stall surprised me as they were fluent English speakers. I asked them about their back story and they told me they'd lived in California. They told me about the health benefits of warabi mochi, the traditional sweet made from bracken starch and kinoko, sweetened ground soy beans. This version mixed with cold water or tea is miraculous, forming distinct shapes of warabi mochi from a powder. It's short on looks but tastes marvelous. It's good with a cup of tea or coffee. You can find NEO Warabi mochi on Amazon Japan.
