NewDays kiosk retro fair until the end of September

No matter if you're an old hand or a recent arrival in Japan, the Showa and Heisei eras aren't that far away in time. But what a different world it was. The Bubble economy ballooned in the 1980s and popped in the early 1990s. My hometown, Vancouver, was brimming with tourists and visiting students from Japan. Friends who worked at Whistler Mountain ski resort told me tales of Japanese dumping designer gear in their hotel rooms. The music scene took off with city pop hits like "Plastic Love" and "Sparkle"

Heisei era ended a mere six years ago, but it feels like an aeon has passed. NewDays, the convenience store kiosks inside JR East train stations, remember the eras with a retro fair. The campaign ends on September 29th.

At Kashiwa Station on the Joban Line, the shop features local products, too. I picked up Kashiwa Beer, which I'll post a review about later.

When you pay with a Suica or Pasmo card, you earn points. Even better, you can enter a draw for a retro radio cassette player and a digital camera.
