The good
For the 149 yen, this small retort-pack of potato salad is a cheap and delicious dinner or bento box side. The potato salad has a lot of flavour and a great texture. It's made with Hokkaido-grown Danshaku potatoes. This is the most common variety of spuds used in Japanese kitchens. The potatoes have a nutty flavour and mash well. I divided the pack between dinner and the next day's bento. A comparable fresh deli container of "potesara" is about 50 yen more. The quality and texture are comparable.
The not so good
7-11's retort pack potato salad is a small portion at 120 grams. It's about 50 yen cheaper than the comparable fresh version in 7-11 deli coolers. Yes, I can make potato salad. However, it requires fuel, labour, and time. In my kitchen, I rely on the most basic appliances - two gas rings, an oven toaster, and a kettle. Making multiple sides for dinner and bentos requires some juggling. And I'm also considering "cospa", cost performance. The potesara is pretty creamy and hits the spot and reasonably priced.
