The description
Sapporo Breweries' Yebisu Premium Beer, a "puremoru", is a lager-type beer with 5% alcohol. The beer, brewed since the late 1800s, often features art on the aluminum cans.
The good
Are you curious about "puremoru" beers in Japan? The mass-produced beer market is dominated by a handful of breweries, Sapporo being one. Yebisu Premium beer started production in the 1890s. It's a 100% malt Pilsner-type lager. While it comes at a premium price, it's a treat for beer fans. The beer has a lovely golden colour, a body that makes you think creamy, and a good flavour profile. The malty, lightly sweet, and citrusy flavour keeps me coming back. Besides the flavour, the labels entice me. Yebisu has a long tradition of "bijinga" images on labels.
The not so good
Sapporo Yebisu Premium beer never disappoints. It's consistent, has a pleasing flavour profile worthy of the premium price, and goes well with washoku. Another attraction is the "bijinga", beauties, on the labels. Sapporo has a long history of beer illustrated labels and posters. In January 2026, Sapporo announced a collaboration with manga artist Yazawa Ai. She's the creator of the globally popular NANA manga series. The drama manga revolves around the lives of two roommates in Tokyo who share the same name, Nana.
