Japan's recorded record-breaking tempetures in summer 2025. In my corner of the Kanto region, we've experienced nettaiya, tropical nights. The nighttime temperatures don't drop below 25 degrees celcius. This makes cooking hot meals hard. At 7-11 this summer, hiyashita mama taberu, eat chilled, items are on offer. With the evening temps topping 27 degrees, I opted for Nikudango to Hanjuku yu de tamago. It's a side dish of four meatballs in a sweet and sour sauce with half a soft-boiled egg. I enjoyed them with chilled salad and a rice ball.

This chilled dish was offered in the summer of 2024, and it looks like the price in 2025 is stable. Nikudango to Hanjuku yu de tamago, meatballs with a soft-boiled egg, is okay for the price. I'm loathe the idea of heating up my kitchen in this stiffling summer to prepare both boiled eggs and meatballs. I'd struggle to season the meatballs correctly as they're not part of my kitchen routine. They augmented my evening meal of "nokke gohan", rice with sides and stewed dishes. Is it economical? Not really, but relieves cooking fuel consumption, either electric or gas.
