The description
Koikeya Confectionery's Koikeya Strong potato chips got a refresh with three varieties in 2025. Nori Zanmai is a 53-gram bag of potato chips laden with nori seaweed.
The good
While I'm trying not avoid highly processed foods by cooking fresh ingredients as much as possible, potato chips are my weakness. This time I caved to Koikeya Strong Potato Chips Nori Zanmai flavour. The bag is 53 grams of thick ripple chips dusted with nori seaweed. Koikeya's product website touts this version with three times the seasoning of its precursor. These are very tasty, full of umami. The flavour gets a boost from sesame oil and chili pepper. I got this treat at a 7-11 convenience store.
The not so good
Koikeya Strong Potato Chips Nori Zanmai flavour is a cheap, satisfying snack. For about 160 yen, you get a lot of crunch and flavour. If you've been snacking in Japan for a while, you may have noticed "shrinkflation" has taken its toll on potato chips. The product weight has typically fallen from 160 grams. This packet is 153 grams. They're still very satisfying with three varieties of seaweed - aonori, yakinori, and aosa (sea lettuce). The flavour is complex with sharpness from chili pepper and unctuous sesame oil.
