TtoE The world's largest citrus

TtoE The world's largest citrus photoThe produce sections of supermarkets are full of citrus fruit right now. From December through late spring, Japan's unshu mikan, pomelos, and other juicy and tangy fruits are at their prime. I tend to go for unshu mikan, the ubiquitous Vitamin-C rich small oranges. When I can get my mitts on them, sudachi and shiikwasa are on my list. Their flavours add punch to savoury dishes.

This week, my local has a limited supply of 晩白柚, banpeiyu. This citrus variety is a pomelo of unusual size! Banpeiyu typically weigh 2 kilograms, but some monsters weigh in at 4 kilograms. The growers are mostly based in Kumamoto and Shizuoka Prefectures.

You can see in the photo an illustration of how to cut and serve the fruit. The fruit packs a lot of sweetness and it's juicy.

Have you tried banpeiyu? Are there Japanese citrus varieties you prefer?
