The description
Amazon seller Contour carries whole dillweed. It's packaged in 50-gram bags sold in quantities of 50 grams to 1 kilogram. The dillweed is grown in the US.
The good
Some common herbs used in North American and European cuisine are hard to come by in Japan. A search on Amazon Japan turned up a supplier importing dill, or dillweed, sourced from the US. The dill is packaged in 50-gram zip-top bags in quantities up to a kilogram. I took a risk and ordered 100 grams. The dill has a good colour, and the scent is just as I remembered - citrusy, grassy, and a little like licorice. The first simple recipe I used it in is boiled potatoes with olive oil, salt and sesame seeds.
The not so good
I'm quite satisfied with the packaging and quality of this dried dillweed. It was a splurge at a little over 1000 yen for two 50-gram bags. I don't regret it, but I wish I could source locally-grown or even better, grow my own. The product reviews on Amazon Japan are meagre. One reviewer says it's not what they expected in terms of flavour. However, this is dried dill, not fresh, and recipes that call for fresh dill have to be adjusted for the dried version. The distributor included two Japanese-language recipe pamphlets.
