Shizuoka Prefecture is a verdant tapestry famous for its tea plantations, especially renowned for its matcha — a finely ground, vibrant green tea powder that is as much a cultural icon as it is a beverage. Makinohara, nestled within Shizuoka, takes pride in an array of matcha products. From the traditional tea to innovative matcha-infused sweets and snacks, this region’s enthusiasts on treasuring green tea and inventions surprised me way beyond.

The matcha tasting kit from Makinohara is an invitation to indulge in the authentic Japanese tea experience. It’s thoughtfully composed of sencha tea for those who appreciate the subtler notes, with matcha pie that captures the essence of this revered tea in a sweet treat, and finally matcha syrup for a touch of creativity in flavor pairing and create your own recipe. This trio serves as the perfect introduction to a matcha tasting ceremony, allowing one to savor the different textures and tastes that come from the ‘same leaf’.

My go-to recipe is by enhancing desserts with matcha syrup which is also a culinary trend in Japan. When drizzled over the delicate, sweet sakura mochi, the syrup adds a depth of flavor that elevates the dessert together with floral sweetness of sakura and richness of matcha creates a dessert that is perfectly-match trio.

My journey to Shizuoka offered a personal slice of tranquility. The Mishima Skywalk provided a serene setting to view the majestic Mt. Fuji, away from the more crowded spots like Kawaguchi Lake. The panoramic view from the Skywalk was a moment of awe, offering a different perspective of this iconic mountain, complemented by the quietude that allows one to truly appreciate its splendour.

Concluding the trip with a visit to Numazu was a feast for the senses. The coastal town is famous for its fresh seafood, providing a savoury contrast to the day’s earlier matcha-infused indulgences. Numazu’s culinary offerings are a reminder of the diverse experiences Shizuoka offers. From the tea fields of Makinohara to the seafood delights of Numazu, highly recommend the journey with full circle of flavours, sights, and serenity — a true celebration of the region’s natural and cultural bounty.
