Easy DIY wallpapering options in Japan

Today is MyDIY day in Japan. It is a monthly commemoration and in a previous month I introduced the anniversary and what it's about. So, today I thought I'd share my experience of wallpapering a room in my house last month.

I didn't have the foresight to take proper notes or keep receipts to write an article about it, so this post isn't about the cost or measurements. It is just my impressions on the experience of wallpapering in Japan. Which I found surprisingly easy and budget friendly.

When I was a child, I used to help my father wallpaper our house. That involved using a work bench so that I could apply the adhesive with a brush and then my father would hang it. I assumed it would be the same in Japan. But I was delighted to find that Cainz have a wide range of DIY wallpaper - different colors, sizes and patterns - that is quite simply peel, stick and cut!

The even bigger surprise was that we didn't have to remove the existing wallpaper. I also have that memory from childhood of laboriously removing the old wallpaper. It was tedious and time consuming. With the peel and stick wallpaper from Cainz, you just wipe down the existing wallpaper, let it dry, and then add the new wallpaper over it. So easy and quick.

My husband and I were able to wallpaper a whole 10 tatami mat room ourselves, in a couple of hours, at a very affordable price. The only thing that we needed to be careful of is the adhesive - it is very strong, so you need to be careful it doesn't stick to your clothes! But it dries slowly so you have time to make any position adjustments when you stick it to the wall, as well as flatten out any air pockets. It really was so much easier than I expected!
